Controlled Ovarian Stimulation

COS

Controlled Ovarian Stimulation (COS) is a crucial step in assisted reproductive technologies (ART) such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). It involves the administration of hormonal medications to stimulate the ovaries and promote the development of multiple follicles, which contain eggs. This process increases the chances of retrieving a sufficient number of mature eggs for fertilization.

  • COS duration is about 12-14 days until there are follicles of adequate size.

  • During COS, regular monitoring through ultrasound scans and hormone blood level measurements is essential to assess follicle development and adjust medication dosages if needed. Once the follicles reach the desired size, a trigger injection is administered to induce the final maturation of the eggs. Approximately 34 to 36 hours later, the eggs are retrieved during a minor surgical procedure.

  • COS involves minimal discomfort. Some patients may experience bloating or mild pelvic discomfort.

  • The risks include ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), multiple pregnancies, and ovarian torsion. However, these risks will be thoroughly discussed with you prior to the initiation of treatment. Throughout COS, you will be closely monitored and managed Dr Kleanthis to ensure the risks are minimised.

  • While COS increases the chances of obtaining multiple eggs, the success of achieving pregnancy depends on various factors, including the quality of the eggs, sperm, and embryo development.

It is important to consult with a qualified fertility specialist like Dr Kleanthis to determine if controlled ovarian stimulation is the right approach for your individual fertility needs. At Fertility Athens, we aim to simplify and support the decision-making process for you and your partner.
